Dr. Francis Rowland MD Pasadena 1890

Dr. Francis Rowland MD Pasadena 1890

“Dr. Francis Rowland MD Pasadena 1890” Oil 54 x 72 by Wenthy Joan Wood - Dr. Rowland and Prof. Charles F. Holder founded the Tournament of Roses in 1890 at the fashionable Valley Hunt Club of Pasadena, CA. This festival of inspiration, health, beauty and abundance, depicted by the famed Rose Parade has become one of the world’s most viewed spectacles.

The artist honors the dreams of this American Pioneer by bringing to life ideals of a photograph, taken in 1890, where Dr. Rowland exhibits the bounties of the West to his Eastern friends. The artist added the Rose of Sharon to the mural behind Dr. Rowland, and a bouquet of Victorian Roses, including modern blooms named “Tournament of Roses”, thus linking the East & West, the Old and New.
